Kenya’s President Launches Talanta Stadium, Scores Penalty Against Sports CS

1st March 2024

President William Ruto displayed his athletic prowess during the launch of Talanta Stadium's construction.

Ruto, cheered as 'the captain of the Kenyan team,' scored a penalty goal against Sports CS Ababu Namwamba, who stood as goalkeeper.

The stadium, set to be built at Nairobi's Jamhuri grounds on Ngong Road, will host 60,000 spectators and feature in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ruto, seen engaging in push-ups earlier, showcased his sporty side while overseeing the stadium launch. He delighted the crowd by scoring a penalty against Namwamba, who diligently guarded the goal post.

Joined by Defence CS Aden Duale, Namwamba, and other officials, Ruto oversaw the groundbreaking ceremony for Talanta Stadium's construction.

The project, approved by the Cabinet in October 2023, underscores Kenya's commitment to hosting the 38th edition of the continental tournament.

Initially considered for construction in Shanzu, Mombasa, the stadium project is now under the supervision of the Kenya Defence Forces.

Additionally, KDF is revitalizing Moi Kasarani Stadium and developing Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret.

Kenya is on a mission to build stadiums all over the country, aiming to become a top-notch sporting destination while nurturing talent.

Talanta Stadium, a key part of this effort, is expected to be cost-effective compared to similar stadiums globally.

Sports CS Namwamba highlighted that the cost of constructing Talanta Stadium is notably cheaper when compared to Amahoro Stadium in Rwanda and Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Ivory Coast.

Amahoro Stadium in Rwanda, for instance, cost between $132 million to $165 million (KSh 19.4 billion to KSh 24.3 billion).

Alassane Ouattara Stadium, which hosted AFCON 2024, had a cost of approximately $257 million (KSh 37.8 billion).

This puts Talanta Stadium's estimated cost at a range between KSh 10 billion to KSh 15 billion.

Emphasizing accountability, Deputy President Ruto assured that the world-class stadium would be cost-effective, emphasizing the need to justify every shilling spent from Kenya's public funds.

In addition to Talanta Stadium, the Ministry of Sports is actively renovating other stadiums.

President Ruto commended the ongoing work at Kasarani Stadium, crucial for hosting AFCON 2027.

CS Namwamba disclosed that other stadiums undergoing renovation include Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega, Kandui Stadium in Bungoma, and Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret.

Furthermore, the Ministry has developed a plan to establish a suitable stadium facility in Mombasa.

The efforts signify Kenya's commitment to investing in sports and talent development, aiming to leverage the skills of the youth for economic gains.

The initiative aligns with the broader vision of positioning Kenya as a formidable force in the global sporting arena while providing opportunities for aspiring athletes nationwide.
