Mercedes-Benz Fire Risk: Company Recalls 116,020 SUVs Prompted by NHTSA Investigation

21st March 2024

Mercedes-Benz has announced a recall affecting a total of 116,020 SUVs. The affected vehicles were produced between 2019 and 2024.

The 2024 Mercedes recall is about a 48-volt ground cable. NHTSA believes that this cable can become loose, posing a risk of overheating and a potential fire hazard.

The affected vehicles include GLC-Class and GLS-Class models, including AMG trims and the Maybach GLS600.

The recall affects various model years and trims. Mercedes-AMG GLE53: 2021-2024, Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S: 2021-2024, Mercedes-AMG GLS63: 2021-2023, Mercedes-Benz GLE350: 2023-2024, Mercedes-Benz GLE450: 2020-2024, Mercedes-Benz GLE580: 2020-2023, Mercedes-Benz GLS450: 2019-2023, Mercedes-Benz GLS580: 2020-2023, and Mercedes-Maybach GLS600: 2021-2023.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducted an investigation prompted by field reports.

These reports revealed that the high-voltage ground connection might not have been adequately tightened during assembly.

Mercedes-Benz has determined potential causes for the cable's loosening. These include rework related to the cable or work performed during assembly.

Mercedes-Benz has not received any reports of damage, injuries, or accidents related to this issue.

However, the company is taking proactive measures to address potential safety risks.

Dealership technicians will inspect the ground cable and tighten it if necessary.

Notifications to dealerships regarding the recall will commence on March 22, with direct notifications to owners scheduled for May.

Mercedes-Benz has advised affected vehicle owners to stay informed about potential safety concerns.

They should promptly contact their dealership for inspection and necessary repairs if they notice any warning messages about the vehicle's power supply.
