New research from ADP reveals that the top skill companies are searching for in new hires is a strong work ethic.

ADP conducted a survey of over 1,500 business owners, senior leaders, and hiring managers to gauge their hiring priorities in 2024. 


Despite the increasing emphasis on technical abilities, soft skills emerged as the clear priority among employers.

 

"A strong work ethic" may seem like a vague concept, but it encompasses traits such as punctuality, organization, efficiency, and a willingness to go the extra mile to excel in one's role. 


These qualities are highly valued by employers but can be difficult to identify during the hiring process.

 

Other sought-after soft skills include problem-solving, time management, and effective communication.


However, employers noted that these skills are often scarce among candidates, making them even more valuable in today's competitive job market.

 

Tina Wang, division vice president of HR at ADP, emphasizes the importance of these soft skills in unlocking an individual's potential. 


While technical skills can be taught, behavioral skills such as a strong work ethic are invaluable from day one, facilitating smoother integration into the workplace and enhancing overall productivity.

 

In response to the challenges posed by the "great resignation," many companies have prioritized upskilling and reskilling initiatives to address skills gaps within their workforce. 


Upskilling involves teaching employees new skills to transition into different roles or expand their current responsibilities, ensuring that they remain relevant in a rapidly evolving job market.

 

Bert Bean, CEO of Insight Global, highlights the importance of focusing on foundational qualities such as hard work, particularly in the aftermath of hiring mistakes made during previous recruitment surges.
