First a house for mom, now a car for herself:  Kenyan woman counts her blessings

1st August 2024

Did you know that 60% of African families believe in the power of parental blessings? Mercy Masai, the communication director at Kenya Judo Federation, is living proof. A year ago, she built a beautiful house for her parents. Now, she has bought her first car, a Nissan Xtrail.

In her social media post, Mercy shared, "One year difference! Last year, I gifted my parents a house. This year, I gift myself my first car!" She thanked God for His grace, saying His timing is perfect. Mercy's journey from a humble background to greatness is a story of hope and inspiration.

Reflecting on Success and Gratitude

Mercy’s mother couldn’t believe the news. Overwhelmed with joy, she prayed over the sparkling white Nissan Xtrail, tears of pride in her eyes. Mercy shared, "My mother was so happy. This is a great achievement for our family."

Reflecting on her progress, Mercy said, "God's timing is the best." Her story, captured in heartwarming photos, has resonated with many, showing the power of faith and hard work.

Gift-Giving in African Culture

In many African cultures, giving back to parents is a cherished tradition. It’s believed that parental blessings bring prosperity. Mercy’s act of building a house for her parents is a perfect example. It’s a gesture of gratitude for their sacrifices.

In contrast, there's the concept of the "black tax." This is the financial support many working adults provide to their extended families. While it’s seen as a duty, it can also be a heavy burden, especially with the rising cost of living and inflation.

Mercy’s Humble Beginnings

Mercy’s story began in a modest home. In April 2023, she shared a photo of the house she was raised in, alongside the new house she built for her mother. The contrast was striking. Mercy said her mum had been her greatest cheerleader, and building her the house couldn’t measure all the sacrifices she'd made.

Mercy’s achievements are not just personal victories but symbols of hope for many facing similar struggles. Her journey shows that with faith, hard work, and parental blessings, one can overcome any obstacle.

The Cost of Living and Inflation

In recent years, the cost of living in Kenya has skyrocketed. Inflation rates have soared, making it harder for many to make ends meet. Despite these challenges, Mercy’s story stands out. She has managed to achieve remarkable milestones, providing for her family and herself.

Gift-giving in Africa is deeply rooted in culture and tradition. It’s a way of showing appreciation and ensuring the well-being of loved ones. Mercy’s acts of generosity reflect these values.

The Road Ahead

What’s next for Mercy Masai? Humorously hinting at her next goal, she said, "Next year ni bwana sasa. Ni mkono wa Mungu for sure (Next year I'm focusing on Mr. Right. This is all God's hand for sure)." Her story continues to inspire, leaving her audience yearning for more.
