Suppression and Deceit: Biden’s TikTok Ban is About Israel and Young Voters

16th March 2024

The United States of America (USA) has passed a bill to ban TikTok, a popular social media platform.

This decision comes amidst growing concerns regarding TikTok's coverage of events in Palestine, particularly the Gaza war, and its impact on the perceptions of young voters.

Journalists are facing restrictions in accessing and reporting from Palestine, leading to a lack of on-the-ground coverage.

An Uncensored Medium

Western media coverage of the Gaza war is being influenced by the Israeli military, which is censoring news reports and controlling journalists' activities in the region.

TikTok has emerged as a significant platform for sharing information about the situation in Gaza, especially among young people more inclined towards anti-war sentiments.

Through TikTok, images and videos depicting the realities of the conflict, including casualties, destruction, and war crimes, have reached global audiences.

As a result, Palestinian rights activists argue that the war in Gaza has fueled anti-TikTok sentiments among conservative lawmakers in the USA.

Pro-Israeli Push for Ban

Leaked recordings suggest that organizations like the Anti-Defamation League and political figures aligned with pro-Israel interests are concerned about TikTok's influence on public opinion.

There are indications that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) has played a role in advocating for the ban or sale of TikTok to an American company.

AIPAC has reportedly made significant donations to lawmakers who support the ban, such as Mike Gallagher, the author of the bill to ban TikTok.

Former President Donald Trump, who initially supported the ban on TikTok, reversed his stance after meeting with billionaire Republican donor Jeff Yass.

The billionaire has investments in ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok.

This suggests that financial interests may also be influencing political decisions regarding TikTok.

White-Washed News

The mainstream media coverage of the Gaza war in the USA has been criticized for sanitizing the conflict and suppressing pro-Palestinian narratives.

CNN Journalist Christine Amanpour has reported instances of her stories being altered or censored in Jerusalem before publication, raising concerns about freedom of the press.

However, Palestinians have utilized TikTok as a platform to bypass traditional media censorship and share firsthand accounts of the conflict.

The platform has become a tool for documenting the brutality of the war, including civilian casualties and destruction, which challenges the narrative promoted by the Israeli government.

The decision to ban TikTok may be attributed to concerns over its Chinese ownership.

But it is also seen as a way for pro-Israel factions in the USA to control the flow of information and influence public opinion.

Additionally, the ban could be a political strategy by the Biden administration to suppress young voters who are dissatisfied with his stance on Israel, mirroring tactics used in authoritarian regimes.
